Homework
Homework is to practice skills that have already been taught in the classroom and to begin a discussion about topics learned with your child. We all need practice to get good at a skill. Children need to practice basic reading, writing, spelling, and math on a consistent basis, and if skills are not practiced, it will show in class!
Each week 1st Graders are asked to complete the following homework:
All homework is due on on Fridays, or on the last day of the week. Students will be graded on homework completion as part of their leadership grade. There will be classroom rewards for completing homework on time and consistently over time. Homework is not required! But we will log and track the homework completed.
Each week 1st Graders are asked to complete the following homework:
- Reading for 20 min each night. This includes independent reading, sight word practice, and being read to by an older sibling or parent. This reading time (total minutes) is to be recored in their homework log.
- Practice spelling words for the week. Spelling list and a menu of practice activities will be part of the weekly homework packet starting in September. Your child's words will show in their Canvas page and will be sent home.
- Math - A menu of items to practice math skills will be sent home in the newsletter. This will include fun math apps, playing games, or observing the world around them.

Classwork and homework that is missed due to excused absences will have as many days as missed to make up work. For example, if you are absent 2 days, you will have 2 school days to make up the missed work.

Grading is based upon the following guidelines:
- 1st grade will use 1, 2, 3, 4 instead of traditional letter grades of A, B, C, D, F.
- Students will be graded on the basis of skills mastery and knowledge.
- Social skills and behavior will be addressed separately with citizenship grades and pertinent comments.
Classroom Expectations
Students are expected to be respectful to the environment, others around them, and themselves. The school uses ¨Love and Logic¨, which will also be enforced in the classroom. Students are expected to participate in classroom activities and be prepared to learn each day.

Students are expected to follow all policies and procedures outlined in the parent handbook that can be found on the ELA website. Most situations will be handled in the classroom, and if necessary parents will be contacted. The school follows Love and Logic guidelines , which in short teaches children natural consequences of their decisions - good and bad.

Meet our friends! They love veggie scraps and to run around our classroom. If you want to bring something in for them to snack on, let me know! Please remember to never stick things in their cage with out asking first. |
